MONOLOGUE SELECTION
It’s all about being true to your character and completely in the moment. Amazing how much training it takes to get there!
Many schools request 2 contrasting monologues and 1 classical, and are very strict regarding the length/time of each piece. PACA will find unique material that is age and personality appropriate. Deciding what to cut can be difficult. No worries, we will take care of all monologue requirements and materials selection.
By understanding the fundamentals of believable acting, you will carry your acting technique into your chosen monologues. Character development will be created and objectives, tactics, physicality and speech will be clean and professional. Interesting blocking (where and how/why you move) will developed and executed. Acting beat work (technique used in order to keep your work active) will be solid and your monologues will demonstrate your training and talent. You will stand out.
SONG SELECTION
You need to be honest and you need to be YOU. Objectives, focus, word coloring, and song analysis will be just a few techniques worked on in order to create your personal best.
With thousands of musical theater songs available, what suits you and your voice? What songs make the audition panel squirm and what makes them sit up and take notice? What has been overdone and what pieces are too difficult for an accompanist to play? What is the difference between legitimate and contemporary? These are just a few questions you will need to have answered, and PACA will happily guide you.
FINDING YOUR BEST 16 & 32 BARS
This is crucial. While some schools require an entire song, most are asking for 2 contrasting pieces, with one of the selections being a legitimate piece (a song written before 1960). PACA will find material that highlights your range while focusing on telling the story. You will learn strong musical theater technique and then apply it to your pieces. You only have 16/32 bars to show off your vocals while telling the story. It’s important to know when less is more or more is IT!
